What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Consultation in Boca Raton
By Dr. Lauren Gerkowicz-Geary, DMD, Board-Certified Orthodontist
If you’ve been thinking about orthodontic treatment for yourself or your child, that first consultation appointment can feel like a big step. You might be wondering what happens, how long it takes, whether it’ll be uncomfortable, or whether anyone is going to push you toward a treatment plan you’re not ready for.
Here’s the short answer: none of that. Your first visit is a conversation, not a commitment.
Let me walk you through exactly what to expect.
The Consultation Is Complimentary
At Bloom Orthodontics, your first consultation is completely free. There’s no fee to come in, meet the team, and find out what your options look like. We want you to feel informed before you make any decisions, and that starts with removing any barrier to just showing up.
What Happens When You Walk In
You’ll be welcomed into a warm, relaxed environment. Our team will greet you, get your basic information on file, and make sure you feel comfortable before anything else happens.
If you filled out patient forms ahead of time online, check-in moves even faster. We’ll confirm a few details and get you back to meet with me shortly after.
A Look at Your Smile
The consultation itself starts with a thorough exam. I’ll take a close look at your teeth, jaw alignment, and bite to get a clear picture of what’s going on and what might benefit from treatment.
We use advanced digital imaging technology, which means no uncomfortable trays and no unnecessary guesswork. The images are precise, and I can show you exactly what I’m seeing in real time. Most patients find this part genuinely interesting, especially kids who get a kick out of seeing their own teeth on screen.
We Talk About Your Goals
This is the part I enjoy most. I’ll ask you what you’re hoping to achieve, whether that’s a straighter smile, a more comfortable bite, or preparing your child’s teeth for healthy development. Your goals shape the conversation, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
There’s no age limit on wanting a confident smile. Whether we’re talking about early treatment for a seven-year-old, braces or clear aligners for a teenager, or Invisalign for an adult who’s been thinking about this for years, everything is on the table.
Your Treatment Options
Once I have a full picture of your smile, I’ll walk you through the options that make sense for you specifically. That might include traditional braces, clear aligners, or a phased approach if we’re working with a younger child.
I’ll explain what each option involves, how long treatment typically takes, and what the experience looks like day-to-day. I’ll also be honest if treatment isn’t urgent or if a watch-and-wait approach makes more sense right now. You deserve a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
Questions About Cost and Insurance
Before you leave, our team will go over the financial side with you. We’ll review your insurance benefits if you have coverage, and walk you through our flexible financing options so you can find a payment structure that works for your budget.
We want cost to feel manageable, not like an obstacle. Most families are surprised by how accessible treatment can be once we sit down and look at the numbers together.
How Long Does It Take?
Plan for about 60 to 90 minutes for your first visit. That gives us enough time to complete the exam, review your imaging, talk through your options, and answer every question you have without feeling rushed.
If you have a busy schedule, let us know when you book. We’ll do our best to find a time that fits your life.
You Leave with a Clear Picture
By the time you walk out the door, you’ll know exactly where your smile stands, what your options are, and what treatment would look like if you decide to move forward. No pressure, no urgency. The decision is always yours.
A lot of patients tell me afterward that they wish they’d come in sooner. The consultation itself tends to be the easiest part of the whole process.
